The characters

    Both the film, THE MAN WHO STOLE MY MOTHER'S FACE, and this companion web site, feature the stories of many people whose lives have been touched by sexual assault and violence against women. To read more, click on each character's image.


    Laura Henkel

    Laura is a mother of two children with a talent for writing poetry, playing piano and acting. She was sexually assaulted in 1988.

    Michael Henkel

    Michael is the eldest of Laura’s children. He works in the motor racing industry and has two daughters.

    Cathy Henkel

    Cathy is Laura’s daughter and a filmmaker who goes in search of justice for her mother and makes a documentary film about her journey.

     

     

     

    Cecily Singer

    Cecily is Laura’s neighbour and lives in Hope Road. She works with a variety of human rights organisations.

    Glory Legodi

    Glory is a flight attendant with South African Airways and lives with her twin daughters in Johannesburg.

    Andre Neethling

    Andre heads up the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in South Africa.

     

    Charlene Smith

    Charlene is an award winning journalist committed to universal human rights and ending violence against women.

    Bongani Linda

    Bongani is a theatre director and campaigner against sexual assault and is based in Johannesburg.

    Cheryl Gilwald

    Cheryl Gilwald is the Deputy Justice Minister in the South African government

     

     

     

    Lisa Vetten

    Lisa is the Gender Project
    Co-ordinator at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation in South Africa.

     

    Thoko Majokweni

    Thoko is the Special Director of Public Prosecutions within the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa.
