Filming the police at work

Wednesday, October 16, 2002

Today we start filming with Capt. Boonstra and a lot of questions will hopefully be answered.

The crew arrived at 7am and we had a briefing breakfast and then drove to Braamfontein. We filmed a briefing meeting with Arnold where I handed over the additional footage of Laura talking about identifying the suspect and we went through the details of the case. Arnold rang Van Der Mescht and he agreed to a meeting next Tuesday at 8am. He did say to Arnold on the phone that he didn’t remember interviewing a suspect over the case, so I told Arnold what I knew and what he had said to Supt Miles last year. Arnold understood and agreed that we may have to push him a bit to remember. However at least he has agreed to a meeting, and I don’t think he’ll evade this one. I decided to speak to Dave van Heerden on Friday about how I should handle next Tuesday.

Arnold offered to take us out on the town in the police vehicle tomorrow night including a tour through Hillbrow. He also spoke about his feelings regarding sexual assault and how he as a father of two young girls copes with living in this country. He is a very accessible and gentle character and will be great for the film.
