Back to South Africa again

Monday, September 23, 2002

Today was a very long day. We started the day in Brisbane at 4.30am and climbed into bed in Johannesburg at 10.30pm (6.30am Australian time), 26 hours later. We flew from Brisbane to Sydney and then on to Johannesburg. As the plane was taking off, I looked across to Aliison, my production manager and close friend who was accompanying me on this journey, and it hit us both that finally this adventure was beginning. We have no idea how it will end or where the journey will take us, but we felt full of hope and confidence, excitement and anticipation, ready for whatever lay ahead. Unlike the last trip, I felt no anxiety or fear about returning to Johannesburg. This time I have resolved to experience the place differently, to look for the light, the positive energies, and the joy. This time I want to leave wishing I could stay and longing to return. I am about to create an entirely new set of beliefs and images about the city of my birth.
